PDQ machines, explained

What is a PDQ machine?

PDQ is an abbreviation of the phrase 'process data quickly' and is an alternative name for a Chip and PIN machine.

How does a PDQ machine work?

The machine works by reading the data stored on your credit or debit cards. The very early models of these machines worked by sliding the magnetic stripe on the reverse of the card through a long reader on the side or top of the terminal.

Most modern PDQ card machines have now updated to a card slot system since the introduction of Chip and PIN technology. The small chip embedded in the card has replaced the stripe and means that consumers no longer have to sign for goods or purchases.

How many different types of PDQ machine are there?

There are three main types:

This easy to use terminal sits by the till or sales desk and connects to either the phone or broadband line. It’s used by retailers, restaurants and anywhere that payments are taken from a single fixed point in the business.

This terminal uses either Bluetooth connectivity to link to a central hub or dock. It can be picked up and carried around like a regular phone handset and works at a range of 100m. These terminals are perfect for hospitality and catering or larger retailers and stores.

This handy terminal can be used anywhere that receives mobile phone reception. It is perfect for a business that travels or works from different locations like taxis, mobile traders and couriers.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between a PDQ card machine and a card reader?

Both of these terms are used to refer to machines that processes credit and debit card payments, so there’s really no difference. The terms 'card reader', 'card machine' and 'Chip and PIN machine' also refer to the same devices.

How many different types of this terminal are available?

You can choose between Countertop, Portable and Mobile machines. Countertop Machines let you process card payments from your sales counter – perfect for shops or cafes. While Portable Machines let you process card anywhere within 100m of your till or EPoS thanks to a Bluetooth connection. This compact solution is ideal for a restaurant or table-service business. Mobile Machines give you the freedom to take card payments anywhere, even on the road, using a secure wireless network.

How long will it take to be delivered?

You’ll be up and running in no time – your terminal will be with you within 5 days of your merchant account approval. Other providers can take weeks or even months, we’re faster so you never miss a transaction.

Can I set it up myself?

All you have to do is take the PDQ machine out of the box and switch it on. Simply follow the on-screen instructions and you’ll be ready to accept cards in just a few minutes. Remember, if you have any difficulties call our friendly team – they’re on hand 24/7.

What types of cards can I accept?

Once your PDQ machine is set up, you’ll be able to accept all major credit and debit cards. This includes Visa, MasterCard and Maestro, so you can keep your customers satisfied.

Can I accept Contactless card payments?

Contactless and smartphone payments are becoming more and more popular amongst consumers. Our PDQ terminals meet that demand with built-in Contactless, Apple Pay and Android Pay. And we don’t charge extra for any form of payment.

What happens if my terminal breaks down?

If your terminal breaks down, don’t worry. Just call us and we’ll do our best to fix the problem over the phone. If the problem continues, we’ll send you a brand new PDQ card machine within 48 hours.
